Bu† I'll be unfit by the time my injury heels...
But I'll be unfit by the time my injury heals...

As an athlete or fitness enthusiast, one of your major concerns will be losing your fitness because you are injured. This need not or indeed should not be the case.
Not only is it possible to maintain your current levels of fitness whilst injured, it is also possible to improve them. It is true that your training should be specific to your sport. However, it is possible to maintain your cardiovascular fitness by cross training while you are injured, and then move onto more specific training as your injury allows.

There are many different components to fitness, and to perform at your optimum level in your sport or activity requires a specific balance of these components. View your injury as a time when you can make gains in complementary areas. These may be areas that are normally given lower priority in your training, or you may be introduced to totally new concepts. The attention paid to these components can often result in better performance on returning to your sport.
